Originally built in 1832 as a private residence by a Virginia General, The Martha Washington Inn has seen many different uses. From private residence it evolved into a finishing school for young ladies. When the armies of the Civil War battled in and around Abingdon, the building served as a hospital for wounded soldiers, and romantic stories of nurses and soldiers still endure to this day. After the Civil War The Martha became a women’s college and today is an elegant hotel, paying homage to its gracious Southern roots and enduring historic legacy.

The Martha Washington Inn, A Camberley Hotel, now offers to its guests, the newly completed natatorium, with its brick facade matching the timeless décor of the building. French doors and a retractable roof bring the outside inside in the warm summer months. A sundeck off the pool provides the perfect spot for a quiet read or warm relaxation in the sun. We are also proud to announce the opening of The Spa at The Martha. The Spa features beautifully appointed treatment rooms, the latest in equipment technology plus an adjoining fitness area, conveniently close to dressing and locker rooms.

The Virginia Creeper Trail is a combined effort of many organizations and passes through several city and county jurisdictions not to mention private property. From the trail head in Abingdon to Damascus, the City of Abingdon and the Town of Damascus maintain and support the trail with the cooperation of the property owners. From Damascus to the NC State line the US Forest Service maintains the trail in cooperation the the property owners.

The Virginia Creeper Trail Advisory Board is comprised of members of each organization to bring about a joint effort in maintaining the trail for everyone to enjoy. A very important asset to the trail is the riders and hikers. Each user is asked to properly respect the land by disposing liter properly and by observing rider courtesy. When passing through private property, please close all gates and show the respect you would expect.

By observing basic courtesies, we can enjoy the trail and preserve the use for others to experience. Thank you.
